As many of us including myself are working from home now I’m certain that ZOOM CALLS have become a regular part of your life. Even if you don’t work I bet you’ve had some fun Zoom calls or even Zoom happy hours with your family and friends. I know I have and although I would much rather see my friends and family in person, for the time being, these entertaining Zoom calls will have to do! In case you haven’t heard of Zoom, it’s basically an app you can download on your phone or computer. It’s an easy and reliable platform for video and audio conferencing. You may be thinking how in the world do I use Zoom which is why I created today’s post and video. I’m sharing 10 things you should NEVER do on a Zoom call, plus 10 Zoom call tips and tricks which will not only make your next Zoom call more seamless but you also LOOK your best!

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO ON A ZOOM CALL:
1.) NEVER FILM WITH A MESSY BACKGROUND:
We all know how distracting a messy background can be during a video chat or a Zoom meeting! Before your meetings, always make sure to tidy up your designated room. Whether the mess is toys from your kids, scattered dirty clothes, coffee mugs or stacked paper and office work – clean it up! No one wants to see a messy or untidied background during a meeting, it’s just too hard to focus! Being more organized will also make you feel more productive, so it’s a win-win. On tips for being more organized, check out my recent post titled: 12 CLOSET ORGANIZATION TIPS.
2.) NEVER WEAR TOO MUCH MAKEUP:
Though you certainly want to wear a little bit of makeup to look presentable, overdoing it can be a bit much. Wearing an excess amount of makeup can even become distracting to those on the other side of the screen. That being said, what’s too much and what’s too little? I’d recommend putting on some foundation that provides good coverage, bronzer, blush and a medium shade lip color. I’d also suggest staying away from nude lip colors because it will wash you out; a medium shade or berry lip color will actually make your teeth look whiter! 3.) NEVER COME TO A MEETING WITH BEDHEAD:
This may seem like a no brainer to some, but brushing your hair before a Zoom meeting is a must in order to look more put-together. You definitely don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed! I don’t think washing and drying and curling your hair before a zoom meeting is necessary. However, on the days I don’t wash my hair, I wet and style my bangs to look a bit more polished before my video meetings. This literally only takes 5 minutes and is so worth it! If you do want to wash and curl your hair and are in the market for a new curling iron, this one from Revolve is one I use a ton!
4.) NEVER PLACE THE CAMERA AT AN AWKWARD ANGLE:
Placing the camera at the right angle can make all the difference in the way you look! I try to always have my iPhone camera at eye-level or a little bit above. You definitely don’t want it too high where people are looking down on you. On the other hand, you don’t want your camera too low because people would be looking at your chin or the wrinkles on your neck! No one wants that, right!? Being in the middle of the screen is where you want to aim each time you’re on video. If you don’t have a phone holder like I do, no worries! Stack some books or boxes to put your phone or laptop on so it’s eye-level for the most flattering angle.
5.) NEVER FORGET TO ADJUST YOUR SETTINGS:
Have you ladies heard about the secret setting on Zoom that makes you look ten times younger?! This setting actually takes the wrinkles, lines and sun spots off of your face! Let me tell you how to do it. First, go to settings on your Zoom account. Then, click meetings and turn on the touch-up appearance. This setting will remain on and makes a significant difference in the way you appear on screen! Trust me, it’s phenomenal, so always make sure this setting is on now that you know the secret!
6.) NEVER FORGET TO MUTE YOURSELF:
Nothing is worse than distracting background noise like a child screaming or a husband talking to you in the distance. In the lefthand corner of your Zoom screen, there is a mute button that makes all the difference! Make sure to mute yourself at all times during the meeting until it’s your turn to talk. This mute setting will eliminate any background noise that may disrupt others who are trying to talk or listen during a meeting on Zoom.
7.) NEVER WEAR OVERSIZED TOPS OR JACKETS:
Wearing bulky, oversized tops on video chat is one of the worst things you can do in my opinion. Because the camera already adds what it seems like 10 pounds already, wearing something a bit more fitted is the way to go! Since only the top part of you will be showing on the screen, wearing anything that makes you look bigger won’t be flattering. You won’t be doing yourself any favors by wearing clothes that are oversized.
If you’re wondering what you should wear, I highly suggest wearing jewel tones because they are the most beautiful colors on any skin tone. This gorgeous royal blue blazer I’m wearing is a perfect example of what to wear during a Zoom call. It’s a structured blazer that’s a lightweight sweatshirt material making it the perfect work-from-home outfit. Not to mention it’s comfortable and extremely soft! I paired it with a simple graphic tee and Madewell denim.
8.) NEVER IGNORE THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCESSORIES:
As most of you know, I’m a true believer that accessories with any outfit elevates your look taking it up a few notches! Though you don’t want to over-accessorize for Zoom meetings, I would still suggest wearing 1-2 necklaces or bracelets with your outfit. This is going to show you made an effort and will make you look more polished. For instance, I often wear simple gold necklaces like this under $70 one from Revolve. Adding a necklace or two to your outfit takes less than 1 minute and will make you look more polished on screen!
9.) NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING:
Before your Zoom meeting goes live, I highly recommend doing a test run in the designated video spot. To ensure things are running smoothly, it’s a good idea to hit record prior to the meeting to do a test run. Some things you might test for could be camera angles, video clarity, makeup and outfit appearance, lighting and settings! Double-checking and planning ahead is always something I will recommend; you never know what you might find that needs changing!
10.) NEVER IGNORE THE LIGHTING:
Last but not least and one of the number one mistakes I notice on Zoom meetings – good versus bad lighting! I cannot emphasize enough the importance of good lighting on a video call. You might be wondering how to access good lighting, so I have a couple tips to share. First, the best lighting should be in front of you. For instance, I have two big windows in my office, so I always make sure I am positioned in front of them. When lights or windows are behind you, there will be dark shadows making it difficult to see your face. If you aren’t sure where good lighting is in your house, walk around with your video on; this should give you a better idea of where you look your best!
If you don’t have good lighting in your house or no windows in your office, no worries! You can do one of two things. For a cheaper option, place a bright lamp behind your phone and in front of your face. If you’re one to be on video often like me, I suggest investing in a ring light! My ring light from Amazon was around $100 and has different light settings making it a phenomenal purchase!
