CLOSET ORGINATION ESSENTIALS:
I cleaned out my closet about 2 weeks ago and created 2 amazing YouTube videos covering this daunting task. Feel free to check out my latest video below titled: 12 CLOSET ORGANIZATION TIPS and my previous video titled: 8 ITEMS YOU SHOULD NEVER PURGE FROM YOUR CLOSET AND 3 YOU SHOULD. I hope they will either help you clean out your closet in a more timely fashion or motivate you to clean out your closet, either way, I hope you enjoy the videos!
12 TIPS TO A MORE ORGANIZED CLOSET:
1) SWAP OUT YOUR HANGERS:
When organizing your closet, I highly recommend using all the same hangers because it creates tons of room and looks super uniform. My go-to hangers are these felt hangers by Joy because they are crazy soft and have rounded edges so they won’t snag or pull your clothes at all. These hangers come in white and black, so I hang my white clothes on the white hangers and my darker clothes on the black hangers! This just makes everything look incredibly organized. I suggest getting hangers that are super thin like these because it will open up your closet even more!
2) FACE ALL OF YOUR CLOTHES THE SAME WAY:
You might be wondering why this is one of my favorite tips when organizing your closet, but it has helped me so much! If you are right-handed, make sure your clothes are facing the left and if you are left-handed make sure your clothes are facing the right. This is extremely helpful because when you are deciding what to wear for the day, you can pull a piece from your closet and it will be directly facing you so it’s convenient and easy to see. Hopefully, you feel more organized like I did after trying this trick!
3) KEEP OUT-OF-SEASON CLOTHES SEPARATE:
Separating in-season and out-of-season clothes is a big way to create more space and organization in your closet. Actually, I suggest putting your clothes that are not in season somewhere that is completely out-of-sight so you can focus solely on your current seasonal clothes that you’re actually wearing. Since I don’t have closet bars that are super high up like some ladies do, I usually pull my out-of-season pieces and put them in another closet down the hall from my bedroom. If you don’t have another usable closet in your house, I would suggest putting your out-of-season clothes in the back of your closet so they are not taking up space in any way!
4) DIVIDE CLOTHES BY TYPE & COLOR:
If you’re a lady who loves clothes like me, you definitely know how difficult and time consuming it can be when trying to find a certain piece of clothing or the right color to go with a specific outfit. I promise this tip will change your life like it did mine! First I recommend separating all of your clothes by style – jackets, tops, jeans, skirts, dresses, etc. Then after separating by style, organize each category by color so you save yourself lots of time by knowing where everything is! It will make your life so much easier.
5) CHANGE TO COOL-TONE LIGHTBULBS:
Good lighting in your closet can definitely make a huge difference in seeing colors more clearly. There are two kinds of lightbulbs – warm tone and cool tone – and I highly recommend going with the cool tone lights for your closet because it will be a true representative of the lighting outdoors. I think my husband got my lights at Home Depot, but you can purchase these bulbs pretty much anywhere!
6) UTILIZE DRAWER ORGANIZERS:
I love my drawer organizers from The Container Store because they are perfect for separating and organizing my bras, underwear, and socks. Before I had this everything seemed to be so jumbled together and mixed up so I’d find myself digging to find the ones I wanted to wear. Trust me, these drawer organizers make the biggest difference by saving time and decreasing stress from disorganization! Also, if your jewelry tends to be disorganized, I highly suggest investing in some jewelry drawer organizers because it will make your life so much easier!
7) DEDICATE A SPOT IN YOUR CLOSET FOR OUTFIT-OF-THE-DAY:
I am a believer that planning ahead and being prepared is key to success! That’s why I have made it a habit to plan my outfits at night for the next day so I can be ready in no time. I personally have a wardrobe rack that I pull out and hang my clothes on for the next day, but if you don’t have a rack, designate a spot in your closet to fold or hang your outfit! This tip will save you so much time in the mornings.
8) UTILIZE EXTRA WALL SPACE:
If you have extra wall space in your closet, I highly recommend hanging up hooks that can be used for multiple different accessories and wardrobe-essentials. This has been a big game-changer for me! I have one set of hooks that I hang all of my belts on and another set on the back of my door where I hang my robes. This not only frees up space on your hanging racks, but it also makes things super easy to find in your closet. Long necklaces can also be hung from hooks on the wall so they don’t get tangled if you don’t have a jewelry drawer organizer or jewelry box!
9) INVEST IN A FULL-LENGTH MIRROR:
I haven’t had a full-length mirror in my closet until recently and let me just tell you how much I love it! My mirror hangs on the back of my door and is so convenient I don’t think I’ll ever take it off. If you don’t have any extra wall space in your closet, I definitely suggest putting it on the back of your door in the closet as I did. It will save you tons of time when deciding on an outfit because if you don’t love what you have on, just change and look again!
10) GET 2 BASKETS: ONE FOR CLOSET ESSENTIALS & ONE FOR HANDBAG ESSENTIALS:
I love this tip because it has saved me so much time ever since I started doing it! First, find 2 baskets – I am on the hunt for some really cool white lacker baskets because I think they would look so pretty. In my closet essential basket, I keep a lent roller for hair or lent on clothes, scissors in case there’s a snag or a tag, and double-sided tape. If you haven’t ever used double-sided tape it truly does work wonders with blazers and low-cut dresses that won’t lay flat. If you’re like me and love to change handbags every other day, you’ll appreciate a handbag essentials basket! This is where I keep my wallet, car keys, makeup powder, and lipstick so everything is always in the same place. Trust me this tip has really helped keep me organized over the years!
11) KEEP A PERFUME TRAY FOR LAST-MINUTE TOUCHES:
The very last thing I do in my closet after I’m dressed and ready to go is spray my perfume! I love having my perfume tray close by because it’s easily accessible and I know I won’t forget to spray some on after getting dressed. One of my favorite perfume trays is this one that’s mirrored and super chic. I also keep a smaller jewelry box on my perfume tray with the accessories I wear almost every day so they are also easily accessible. This is another time-saving tip that has truly helped me stay organized!
12) GET A STEP LADDER FOR HIGHER SHELVES:
If your closet is like mine and you have some higher bars or shelves, you will certainly need a step ladder for assistance! I love keeping one in my closet so I don’t have to go into the garage or into another room to access it. I got my step ladder at The Container Store and I love that it folds up so it doesn’t take up much space in my closet at all. Another item you might want to invest in if your shelves are higher up is a reaching pole. This pole has really helped me when trying to grab something that’s out of reach! Having these two items in your closet at all times will save you lots of work and will keep you extra organized.
