8 ITEMS YOU SHOULD NEVER PURGE FROM YOU CLOSET & 3 YOU SHOULD

I want to take this time again to address the Covid-19 virus and let you all know that all my love goes out to you and your family during this difficult time.  During this downtime, I’ve decided to try and keep a positive attitude and find as many constructive things around the house to do as possible. 

One of the first things I thought of and actually did was clean out my closet and re-organize it.  I think it’s the perfect time to tackle such a daunting project, so I wanted to share it with all of you in case you’re looking for some things to do to pass the time.  In case you’re wondering how to do a closet purge, I’m sharing a YOUTUBE VIDEO and a blog post featuring 8 items you should NEVER purge from your closet and 3 you should.  I’m wearing 2 things you should never get rid of in today’s chic spring ensemble, can you guess what they are?

1.) BLAZERS:

Timeless, versatile and chic – blazers will never go out of style. I wear them all the time including to church, business meetings, date nights, girls’ night out, and while I’m running errands. If you haven’t already, I definitely recommend investing in a couple of blazers for your wardrobe! One of spring’s hottest trends is an over-sized blazer as seen in my recent post titled: CHIC AT EVERY AGE FEATURING AN AMAZING FAUX LEATHER BLAZER. Two of my favorite blazers are this scuba blazer by Veronica Beard which comes in navy and white and this regent blazer by J Crew! 2.) LEATHER JACKETS:

A leather jacket is such a cool piece to throw on with any look and will add a bit of edge to your outfit while still looking sophisticated. I love wearing leather jackets over midi and maxi dresses and also dressed down with denim and sneakers. If you don’t own one already, I would say you should invest in at least one good black or navy leather jacket. If you’re looking for a great one to splurge on, the Iro navy leather jacket is amazing and the leather feels buttery soft. I also love this similar one for less from Nordstrom just as much!

3.) WHITE SNEAKERS:

A good pair of white sneakers is something I wear year-round especially while traveling or running errands on the weekend. They truly never go out of style and are must-haves in my opinion! White sneakers go with so many looks because of the neutral color and they’re super versatile. My favorite white sneakers right now are these amazing golden goose dupe sneakers by Steve Madden that are perfect for spring and so comfortable. Would you believe me if I told you they are under $100 and look almost identical to the real thing?!

4.) SKINNY JEANS:

I highly recommend hanging on to the skinny jeans in your closet because they have been in style for many years and will be for a long time! I am a true believer in skinny jeans because they’re so timeless, versatile and flattering. My most favorite and newest pair of skinny jeans I recommend are these by J Brand and they’re 20% off! These skinny jeans are ultra high-waisted which means they’re going to make you look taller and slimmer as well as make your legs look crazy long and who doesn’t want that?! The light-wash is perfect for spring and summer so they will incorporate well into your seasonal wardrobe! 5.) SLIP DRESSES:

I love slip dresses so much because they are so timeless and look extremely chic and polished. I personally love wearing slip dresses with leather jackets to add edge to my look, however if you want to look a bit more classy and sophisticated, I would recommend draping a blazer over the top! All slip dresses are made different so my advice to you is to make sure it’s a midi length and fits your body the right way. One of my favorite slip dresses is this beautiful olive green one by Frame because the fit is amazing for me personally and flows nicely! It’s also on sale for 25% off so it’s a great time to invest!

6.) BASIC SWEATERS:

Classic and basic sweaters are pieces I truly believe you should never get rid of. I highly recommend keeping all of the basic sweaters in your closet because they can be worn very consistently in the fall and winter months keeping you warm and cozy! Classic sweaters will never go out of style and can be worn alone or paired with any kind of jacket or blazer. One sweater I know I’ll have forever is my black halogen cashmere sweater from Nordstrom that is under $100 and comes in lots of other colors too. Another one of my favorite basic sweaters is this amazing v-neck sweater by J Crew that also comes in a variety of colors.

7.) DESIGNER HANDBAGS:

As most of you know by now I am a sucker for designer handbags and carry one everywhere I go! I personally love designer bags and switch between 3- 4 of my favorite spring and summer bags depending on the outfit I have on. I definitely recommend keeping all of your designer handbags since they are such a big investment and hold together so well for years. However, if you have a handbag in your closet that you’re getting tired of or have owned for over 5 years, I recommend selling it on The Real Real because you will probably be able to make some money off of it! 8.) AVIATORS:

Aviators are truly the only type of sunglasses I will wear because of my smaller face shape so I swear by them! I believe aviators look amazing on almost everyone, though. The cool aviator style has been around forever… who remembers Top Gun?! Ray-Bans are my go-to when it comes to aviators and the prices are amazing. You really can’t go wrong with these sunglasses and they are perfect for wearing all year round. Some of my favorite aviators are these pink shades by Celine and the color is so perfect for spring and summer! I also love these budget-friendly aviators by Ray-Ban and they come in tons of different colors.

3 ITEMS YOU SHOULD PURGE FROM YOUR CLOSET:

1.) ANYTHING YOU HAVEN’T WORN IN THE PAST SEASON OR 2:

TREND PIECES: For trend pieces, the rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in the last year then get rid off it.  For example, it’s spring now, if I didn’t wear this piece last spring I need to toss it.

BASICS: For basics, the rule of thumb is a little longer, if you haven’t worn it in the last 2 seasons then toss it.  For example, if I have a pair of jeans I didn’t wear last spring and know I’m not going to wear this spring then I will get rid of them.

2.) ANYTHING THAT DOESN’T FIT:

If something in your closet doesn’t fit you the right way, it’s definitely time to get rid of it! However, if something in your closet is too big on you and tailor is able to fix it, keep it. Wearing clothes that are too big or too small is wasted space in your wardrobe.

3.) ANYTHING THAT IS STAINED OR LOOKS WORN DOWN:

This is definitely the most important thing when purging or cleaning out your closet! If you have any clothes that are pilled, stained, grungy, or dirty – it’s time to simply throw them away. I know I definitely don’t want to wear anything that looks old or dingy!

TIP FOR HOW TO DO A CLOSET PURGE: When cleaning out your closet, I suggest taking everything out, laying it all on your bed and only putting things back in your closet that you know you’re actually going to wear.
