7 HEALTH TIPS TO STAYING FIT OVER 40 (AND REALLY ANY AGE):
1.) EAT CLEAN:
I truly believe that what you eat is key to staying healthy, feeling good, and looking fit. Personally, I eat tons of veggies and white meat like chicken and fish. I don’t eat a ton of unnecessary carbs or red meat because those foods just don’t agree with me and I know I’ll feel gross and bloated afterwards. So, I guess you could say I basically eat a Paleo diet. Also, I try eating a big salad and lean protein around 5 each night and waiting until the next morning to drink my smoothie – otherwise known as intermittent fasting. Click here for more info on the benefits of intermittent fasting.
2.) EAT PROTEIN-PLANT BASED SMOOTHIE FOR BREAKFAST:
I drink my favorite homemade smoothie almost every single day for breakfast, and it never gets old! It tastes so yummy and has so many rich nutrients including my Epic Protein by Sprout Living. This protein makes me feel super full and energized throughout the entire day. I also add coconut water to my smoothie instead of dairy to minimize calories. Chia seeds are super high in fiber and nutrients, too, so I love adding some of those. Lastly, the cacao powder I add has to be my favorite ingredient – it almost tastes like malt flavoring, but healthy! It adds a chocolate flavor which is so delicious. Keep scrolling to see the entire recipe at the end of this post!
3.) DRINK MINIMAL ALCOHOL:
I know it might sound crazy, but I’ve never really been a huge drinker. To be honest, I never feel good when I drink, and I definitely don’t sleep well. I will wake up in the middle of the night or get a bad headache from the alcohol. Also, if I’m feeling horrible the next day, I won’t eat clean or crave healthy foods! Certainly I love drinking prosecco with friends or when celebrating, but I don’t drink very often. Just a personal choice! If you’re trying to slim down or feel more energized throughout the day, try cutting back on your alcohol and see how you feel! It’s something that’s always worked for me.
4.) ONLY EAT ONE SWEET PER DAY:
This one is definitely tough for me since I have the biggest sweet tooth ever! But, will power is key. I try my very hardest to limit my sugar intake to one sweet per day or every other day. I really do believe in moderation. Some of my favorite “healthy sweets” are chocolate covered almonds, fruit or banana bread. Keep in mind, limiting your favorite indulgence food to once a day might make you feel better and more energized believe it or not!
5.) DRINK LOTS OF WATER:
The more water the better! Depending on your weight, you should be drinking at least 120 oz. per day to get the full benefits. I personally love Essentia bottled water because it tastes so fresh and is alkaline making it mineral-dense! Did you know, if your body is in an alkaline state, your body is able to fight disease? What a perfect time for our bodies to be on the defense! Most importantly, drinking water will cause a feeling of fullness preventing overeating. Water detoxifies and flushes out the body as well as rejuvenates the skin!
6.) EXERCISE REGULARLY:
I think I would go insane if I didn’t workout 6 times a week. I love exercising because it makes me feel better mentally and physically. Endorphins in the brain are released when we exercise, which therefore keeps our mental health in check! The body is so cool. Being in quarantine, we have all had to think outside the box regarding exercise. I’ll share two of my favorite work out regimens below:
Black Swan Yoga – I have been doing yoga for about 10 years now and swear by it. I normally do hot yoga, but since I’ve been staying home, I’ve been doing the power flow yoga with Black Swan on live. They also have a YouTube channel, so if you aren’t able to watch live, you can watch when you’re free! Yoga is phenomenal and I feel mentally relaxed each time I do it. Check out their Instagram HERE.
The Sculpt Society – On the days I’m not doing yoga, I do full body workout classes with Megan on The Sculpt Society. I love doing these workouts because I get cardio and light weight lifting in which is a great fat burner! They offer tons of different time allotments and workout levels which I love. Be sure to head to their websites above to download their apps. Working out from home has never been easier!
7.) BE ACTIVE:
Staying active can be tough while being stuck at home during times like these! Trust me, I understand. We’re all in the same boat! However, being active is extremely important for so many reasons, including mental and physical health. Even if you aren’t going to work out one day, make sure to do something. Walk your dog, ride your bike, get outside, take the stairs – as long as you get up to move! If you are working from home, make sure to take breaks as often as you can. I think being active means being more youthful and promises to look and feel better!
