Knowing the best tops to wear with jeans can completely transform your outfit and help you look more modern, balanced, and effortlessly chic. With so many denim silhouettes trending right now — from wide leg jeans to barrel jeans to modern skinny jean alternatives — it can feel confusing trying to figure out which tops actually work best with each style. In this post, I’m breaking down the tops you should stop wearing with your jeans and what to wear instead if you want your outfits to look more flattering, polished, and current. And make sure you scroll all the way to the end because I’m sharing my thoughts on what might be the most controversial denim silhouette of them all: the barrel jean.

The Best Tops to Wear With Modern Skinny Jeans:
If you still love skinny jeans, the modern skinny jean alternative is definitely the slim ankle jean. These Mother Hustler ankle jeans are one of my all-time favorite denim styles because they’re flattering, comfortable, and easy to style. One of the biggest mistakes women make with slimmer jeans is pairing them with a fitted tank or tight tee and no layering piece. Instead, one of the best tops to wear with jeans like these is a cropped jacket. It creates balance and gives the outfit a much more polished feel. I styled these light wash ankle jeans with a white tank, a cropped white jacket, and white heels for an elevated look that still feels modern and effortless. The cropped jacket also helps define the waist while elongating the legs.

What Tops to Wear With Straight Leg Jeans
Straight leg jeans are one of the most wearable denim trends because they work on so many different body types. The key to styling them well is avoiding overly boxy tops or oversized stiff blazers that can overwhelm your frame. Instead, opt for fitted layers underneath your jackets to create balance and shape. I paired these light wash straight leg jeans with an ivory tank and a baby blue blazer with the sleeves pushed up for a more relaxed and flattering look. Pushing up the sleeves instantly makes blazers feel less corporate and much more modern. This outfit feels polished, effortless, and very versatile for everything from lunch meetings to date night. I’m wearing a size 24 and I would stick with your regular size for the best fit.

The Most Flattering Tops to Wear With Wide Leg Jeans
Wide leg jeans are one of the biggest denim trends right now. However, they can quickly look overwhelming when paired with long tunics or oversized tops. Since wide leg jeans already create volume on the bottom, the goal is to balance the look with something more fitted on top. This sleeveless blue top works beautifully because it defines the waist while still feeling sleek and sophisticated. I also added a belt, which is one of my favorite styling tricks. It accentuates the waistline and makes the outfit look more intentional. These Mother wide leg jeans are incredibly flattering and give you legs for days thanks to the high waist and longer inseam.

Chic Tops to Wear With Cigarette Jeans Over 40
Cigarette jeans are such a great option if you prefer a slimmer silhouette but still want something more current than skinny jeans. One of the best tops to wear with jeans in this silhouette is a structured oversized jacket. The fitted shape of the jeans naturally balances out the volume on top. I styled these ivory cigarette jeans with a fitted top and this gorgeous oversized blue suede cropped trench. The jacket has beautiful structure with shoulder pads and dramatic sleeves. However, belting it at the waist keeps the look flattering and feminine. I absolutely love this blue shade because it feels elevated, fashion-forward, and incredibly chic over 40.

How to Wear Barrel Jeans Without Looking Frumpy
Barrel jeans are definitely one of the most controversial denim silhouettes right now. Personally, I prefer the softer and slimmer barrel jean styles over the exaggerated versions. The key to making barrel jeans look flattering is balancing the volume on the bottom with more structured or fitted tops. Oversized ruffles, puffy sleeves, and bulky tops can quickly throw off the proportions. I paired these white slim barrel jeans with a fitted black tee that has subtle shoulder structure and flattering ruching around the waist. Adding a belt also helps define the waist and creates a more balanced silhouette. This outfit feels modern, sophisticated, and wearable while still embracing the barrel jean trend.
