Happy Tuesday!  If there is one question I had to pick that I get asked most often it would be this: How do you stay so fit at your age?  If you’re wondering how I stay fit over 40 and in my 40s  then you’ve come to the right place because in today’s post and YouTube video I’m sharing 7 wellness tips I swear by and have been practicing for years.  My body has changed since I’ve reached my upper forties, 47 to be exact, so I have actually tweaked a few things in the last few years that have made a huge difference.  So whether you’re over 40, over 30, or even over 50 or 60 my goal and hope are that these 7  life-changing health tips will help you become the best version of yourself.  I realize everyone is different so take what you like and leave the rest.  One thing I know for sure is that these 7 health tips have helped me tremendously and they’re why I can say I’m in the best shape of my life at 47 years old!  Be sure and scroll all the way down to check out these 7 amazing tips, plus 5 chic workout looks, and the informative video I created to learn even more about my wellness routine.

7 FITNESS TIPS ON HOW TO STAY FIT OVER 40:

1. WHAT YOU EAT IS 85% RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SIZE YOU ARE:

The food that you eat is actually way more important than how much you exercise! If you are not eating right, you probably will not lose or maintain your weight if that is your goal. That is because nutrition is so important and key to staying fit.

One of my most asked questions is “what do you eat to stay healthy?” Each day, my diet stays pretty similar and consistent. I eat a version of keto, however, it’s more like a Mediterranean style keto with lots of salads, greens, and protein like salmon and lean white meat. I really try to stay away from red meat because it always upsets my stomach. I would say definitely pay attention to what you’re eating and find those healthy foods that make you feel energized!

2. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER:

Water is pretty much all I drink throughout the day besides my morning cup of coffee! I specifically love Essentia water because I believe it is the best water for you thanks to its alkaline base. When our bodies are in an alkaline state, they go into the disease-fighting mode with a boosted immune system which is amazing. Drinking enough water will help your hair grow, your skin, and will also help you feel fuller so you are satisfied throughout the day.

3. MINIMIZE YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE:

I know this one might not be a fun tip to hear, but it’s definitely worth it if you’re wanting to stay fit or lose weight! Personally, I do not drink a ton of alcohol because it literally makes me feel awful (even just 2 glasses of wine). The day after drinking, I can guarantee I will give into those hangover cravings and want to eat everything in sight. I will definitely have a glass of wine every now and then, though.

4. DRINK A PROTEIN SHAKE FOR BREAKFAST:

Around 10 or 11 am each morning, I make this yummy vegan, plant-based protein shake. It is filled with fruits, vegetables, protein, and essential nutrients that make me feel good and energized each day. I’ve been doing this for 12 years and it truly makes the biggest positive difference for me.

PLANT-BASED PROTEIN SHAKE RECIPE:

 

1 scoop of  SPROUT LIVING plant-based protein powder:

1/4 banana

                                                                                                                                                                            1/4 avocado

1 scoop of Collagen Powder 

1/4 cup of mixed frozen organic blueberries

1/2 cup of frozen organic spinach

3 ice cubes

1 teaspoon of chia seeds 1

1 1/2 – 2 cups of coconut water – hands down the best form of hydration

Combine all of these ingredients in a blender or NutriBullet and mix on high for 60 seconds.

5. TAKE VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS:

If you don’t already take vitamins and supplements, I definitely feel like it’s made a difference in my 40s. I recently got my blood drawn and found out I was low in certain areas, so now I take 8 vitamins that my body has really been needing! I’m less tired at the end of the day and these help me feel energized with a good mental state. One supplement, in particular, that has truly changed my life is L-Theanine. It’s an anti-stress supplement that lowers cortisol levels – I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night to help sleep better.

 

6. EXERCISE AT LEAST 4 DAYS A WEEK:

I personally work out 6 days a week, however, it is not required to work out 6 days a week to lose weight!  I would definitely shoot for 3-4 times a week if you can. Whether it’s joining a workout class, going to the gym, or walking your dog through the neighborhood, try to move as much as possible.

I do Pure Yoga 3 times a week and it makes me feel like a million dollars! It’s a 90-minute workout class in a 105-degree room that really helps my mental state. All of your cells are rejuvenated and revitalized….I do it for my mental state more than anything else.  Most, if not all, of my creative ideas for my blog and YouTube channel, come to me in these classes because my mind is cleared.

The Tracy Anderson method is another workout class I love! It’s so convenient because I can do it all on my phone and her classes are only 30 minutes. Her classes involve light weights which are perfect for me and her workouts are actually super fun!

Ninety20 is another class I enjoy 1-2 times per week and it’s very unique. The entire class you wear a vibrating suit while lifting light weights and doing squats and lunges. It’s a fairly easy 20-minute workout that is like you worked out for 90 minutes since you’re wearing the suit.

 

7. DON’T EAT AFTER 6 PM:

To me, this tip is the most important! Keep in mind… it’s not only what you eat, but it’s also when you eat. I really try not to eat after 6 pm on the weeknights because I think it’s really good to have an empty stomach throughout the evening. In fact, you will notice a difference in the way you sleep when you’re not eating late or eating heavy meals. I try to do this 85% of the time, however, if I am going out on the weekends with my girlfriends or my husband, this rule does not apply of course!
