5 STEPS TO A MORE ORGANIZED CLOSET
in Fashion on 26/09/2018
We just moved into a new home in June this year and I couldn’t be more excited! One of my favorite things about our new home is the master closet, it’s got so much more space than my last closet! However, even with more space it’s important to organize everything in my closet so it’s easily accessible. Today I’m excited to share with all of you five tips to an organized closet!

5 Tips to a More Organized Closet:
STEP 1.) GET RID OF WHAT YOU DON’T NEED:
I typically clean my closet out at least 4 times a year. If I come across something that I haven’t worn the last 2 seasons then I usually get rid of it. Also, toss anything that doesn’t fit you anymore, no reason to hold on to clothes that you can’t even wear. Another reason I get rid of clothes is if there are stains on them that can’t be removed or general wear and tear likes rips, tears, or pilling. There are 2 exceptions to keep in mind, if it’s sentimental then of course hold on to it or if it’s made by a premium designer I would consider selling it to a consignment shop. My favorite one and where I sell all of my designer pieces is on The Real Real, they offer really good commission! Check out my latests post on why The Real Real really is the best luxury consignment store. Let your old clothes that you don’t wear anymore bring someone else joy!
STEP 2: DIVIDE EVERYTHING BY COLOR AND TYPE OF CLOTHING:
This is key when organizing your closet and probably the most important part. In my closet I group all of my jackets together in one section. For example, all of my black leather jackets, black blazers and black bomber jackets are hung up next to each other. I have sections for all of my jackets broken down by color and the type of jacket. I do this for all of my tops, all of denim and even my shoes. For example, I have all of my white tops grouped together, then it goes to blue tops, and then pink tops and so on. You can even break it down even further which is what I do and recommend, and group all of your short sleeved white tops together and then all of your long sleeved tops together. Do this for all of your tops, jackets, shoes, and denim and you’ll find that you can locate anything in no time at all!
Shoes can be done this way as well. I group all of my black pumps together, all black booties, all nude pumps, all nude ankle strap pumps, etc. and of course group all of my sneakers together too. Also, be sure and put the shoes you wear more often with in reach and your dressy shoes that you don’t wear very often up higher.
STEP 3: DECIDE WHAT NEEDS TO BE FOLDED AND WHAT YOU CAN HANG UP:
Identify your specific closet and decide how much shelving you need based on how much hanging space you need and organize accordingly. For example, I used to hang up my denim in my last closet because I didn’t have much shelving space, but in this closet I have a ton of shelving space so I decided to fold all of my denim and put them on shelves, see photo below. For my closet space this worked since I had a ton of shelves and needed to free up some hanging space. I group all my denim by wash and designer and fold them so I can see the tag easily and identify each pair quickly.
I also recommend folding all of your sweaters and group them by color. Folding sweaters works because they don’t wrinkle and it makes them easily accessible. If you need to free up more hanging space you could also easily fold all of your tees and group them by color as well.
Everything else like tops, dresses, skirts, and jackets can be hung up and grouped by color and type of clothing.
STEP 4: USE THESE 6 CLOSET ACCESSORIES:
My gorgeous metallic cowhide cubes are so perfect for sitting down and putting on my shoes! These are by Parker and Hyde and I’m obsessed with all of their products! They make the most beautiful furniture, I just got this gorgeous mongolian fur bench for my bedroom (see photo below) and 2 smaller ones in my living room – click HERE to view that blog post. They can make anything you want which I love and it’s a local Dallas company which is even better! You can get a better idea of their gorgeous products by checking out their Instagram page by clicking HERE.
My favorite closet accessory that I changed over too years ago and can’t believe I lived this long without using are these AMAZING Joy hangers available at the Container Store, these are seriously LIFE CHANGING! I love that they are felt so your clothes don’t slip off and they are really thin so you can hang up a ton more and it still looks organized. They’re also durable enough to hang winter coats on. I highly recommend changing out all of your hangers to these fabulous Joy hangers, trust me, you’ll be glad you did!
I love these felt drawer organizers which are so perfect for storing jewelry. I have a few of these, but I also got this gorgeous large jewelry box from Pier 1 that is so perfect for storing all my jewelry! It has a compartment on the top which is perfect for my watch and all of my rings. Then on the sides there are 2 doors and on the inside they have tons of hooks to hang all of my necklaces on. There are also a few large drawers at the bottom which are nice to store other things in such as extra buttons from jackets or small scarves.
If you have a large closet with high shelves this light weight step stool is a definite must-have to reach all of your items that are up high. This one I purchased from Container Store I’m very happy with! It’s light weight and easy to move.
A reaching pole is another neccessity for those high to reach places and is nice to have if you don’t feel like getting your step stool out. I love this one from the Container store, it’s long enough for all of my high reach places and easy to store.
I use these wall hooks to hang my belts and my robes on. I put one behind my door and one on an empty wall. These durable hooks are the perfect spot for scarves, belts, and robes!
STEP 5: STORE YOUR OUT OF SEASON CLOTHES AND FORMAL WEAR IN ANOTHER CLOSET:
If this is possible and you have an extra closet in your home I highly recommend storing all of your out of season clothes and shoes in it! I have a hall closet that I just had California Closets re-do, more of that coming to the blog soon so stay tuned. This will be the place where I keep all of my out of season clothes and formal wear like fur and faux fur coats and formal dresses. This will free up space in your everyday closet making it look and feel more organized!
OUTFIT DETAILS: UNDER $100 UTILITY JACKET:
I fell like my utility jacket is worth mentioning because it’s so chic and ONLY $69!! I just got it 2 weeks ago and I’ve already worn it like 6 times. I wore it to the airport, it travels very well because it’s wrinkle free and super comfortable. I wore it on the weekend with jeans and sneakers to run errands and I even wore it on a date night with a lace cami and leopard heels. Trust me, you need this jacket, it will take you many places in style and comfort!
