HOW TO LOOK EXPENSIVE ON A BUDGET

Happy Wednesday ladies!  With the COVID-19 crisis in full swing and the loss of millions of jobs around our country I thought this would be the perfect time to share a few tips and tricks on how to look expensive when you’re on a budget.  You certainly don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on everything in your closet, in fact, you shouldn’t!  You may be wondering how to look expensive on a budget and if you are then you’re in luck!  There are really only 2 main things you should invest in that will no doubt make your spring and summer ensembles appear to look luxe even if they’re not.  For example, everything I’m wearing in the first look is under $100 except my shoes and my bag, however, you would never know it!  These are fashion hacks I practice every single day and they’re all super easy to emulate.  Scroll all the way down to view all 10 tips with looks to go with each tip so you can actually see how to incorporate these style hacks into your everyday outfits!  As always, feel free to shop anything you love along the way because a ton of it is on sale and super affordable!

10 TIPS TO LOOKING LUX ON A BUDGET:

1.) ALWAYS ADD A THIRD LAYER:

This is one of my favorite tips and one that I follow almost every single day!  Adding a jacket to any look is an automatic way to make you look more polished and put together and yes more lux too! Even if the jacket isn’t expensive it will make your entire look appear to be more luxe!

2.) ALWAYS ADD AT LEAST ONE ACCESSORY:

Adding at least one statement accessory to your look will always make it look more expensive even if the accessory itself isn’t expensive.  For example, my gold chain necklace I’m wearing in look one isn’t that expensive compared to a lot of other gold chain necklaces, however, it really elevates this entire look and makes it appear more luxe-looking!  I literally wear this necklace with all of my looks since it goes with everything.  If you only add one accessory this summer let it be a gold chain necklace! If this one if out of your budget, no worries, I found an amazing one that is very similar and well under $100!

3.) MATCH YOUR SHOES TO YOUR HANDBAG:

Matching your shoes to your handbag is a sure-fire way to make your ensemble appear to look more expensive.  Even if your shoes and handbag aren’t designer as long as they go together and are high-quality looking this tip will always elevate your look.  They don’t have to exactly match either as you can see in look 1.  My shoes are snake print and my handbag is beige but since the snake print pattern has beige in it these 2 items really compliment each other.  My favorite high-quality handbag designer that’s not crazy expensive but still makes amazing handbags is Rebecca Minkoff.  If you don’t want to spend a ton but still want a high-quality bag I would highly recommend checking her bags out.

4.) CHOOSE NEUTRALS OVER LOUD COLORS:

Choosing neutrals over loud crazy colors will always make your looks appear to be more luxe. For example, in the look above this under $100 faux leather blazer looks way more expensive than it really is and I think it has everything to do with the fact that this blazer is a versatile and neutral color.

5.) GO MONOCHROME:

When in doubt, an all-white ensemble is a guaranteed way to look more luxe, especially in the spring and summer.  You would never know that this classic white button-down is under $100 since it just blends right in with the rest of my look.  I have on my go-to gold chain necklace and am carrying a bag that compliments my shoes proving that some of the tips I shared above really do work.

6.) ALWAYS PICK SOLIDS OVER PRINTS:

Solid pieces of clothing always look more expensive than prints because even if the fabric isn’t super high-quality you really can’t tell.  So the next time you’re out and about shopping or perusing your favorite on-line store opt for the solid piece of clothing, trust me, it will look more expensive!

7.) OPT FOR BASICS VS. TREND PIECES: 

A well functioning wardrobe should be made up of 80% basics and 20% trend pieces.  This will allow you to get dressed every single day without that dreaded feeling of “I have nothing to wear” and it will make your looks appear more expensive!  Basics always look more luxe than trend pieces so stick to only one trend piece or no trend pieces in your every day looks.  Case in point, in my look above which is made up of 100% basics you would never know that the blazer I’m wearing is under $100!  The reason is that it’s a solid fabric so it automatically looks more luxe and it’s a basic and timeless piece that will never go out of style.  I also followed the handbag and shoe rule as well as the accessory rule which elevates this classic look even more.

8.) UTILIZE YOUR TAILOR:

It’s no surprise that when your clothes fit you the correct way they just look more expensive.  So always, always, always utilize your tailor!

9.) INVEST IN YOUR SHOES AND HANDBAG:

This is something I’ve talked about a ton of my blog and on my YouTube channel and that is invest in your shoes and handbags since these are items you will wear over and over again with numerous looks.  As you can see from all of my outfits in today’s post even if my clothing isn’t expensive my ensembles appear to be luxe since I’m carrying a high-quality handbag and wearing amazing shoes.

10.) PAIR DENIM WITH A SIMPLE WHITE TOP:

I’m not sure why, but a simple white top paired with a really good pair of jeans just looks expensive especially when you’re carrying a high-quality handbag and wearing a classic pair of heels.  My shirt is under $100 but since I’m following almost every rule I recommended above my outfit looks way more expensive than it really is!
