5 TIPS FOR FALL LAYERING WITH STYLE
in Fashion on 27/09/2022
October is almost here which means fall temps are quickly approaching, the perfect time to share my fall layering tips! I’m a big fan of fall because it means pumpkin spice lattes, sipping wine by an outdoor fire, and layering up on cozy fall pieces like jackets and sweaters! One chic way to dress once the fall temps hit is to layer strategically rather than just throw on a heavy coat and call it a day. There is actually an art to layering and if done right you can take your fall outfit from FINE to FAB in no time!
You want to make sure you don’t look too bulky because this can make you look bigger than you actually are and playing with textures and prints can also be tricky because you don’t want to look mismatched either. If you’re wondering how to layer for fall in the MOST STYLISH way then you’re not alone. I get a ton of questions on how to layer like a pro, which is why I decided to dedicate an entire post to fall layering tips. Keep scrolling for 5 chic style tips on how to layer for fall featured in one fabulous fall look.
SHOP THE LOOK:
TIP #1: START WITH A BLANK CANVAS
What I mean by blank canvas is a monochrome base layer. Start with a simple white, black, or neutral-colored cami, tank, or bodysuit. Then select a pair of neutral bottoms such as black blue denim or neutral-colored pants. Put them together and you have the perfect base layer to build your fall look on! This Agolde scoop neck tank has been a featured player in my fall wardrobe and is a perfect base layer tank.
TIP #2: KEEP EVERYTHING UNDERNEATH FITTED
Keeping your base layers fitted is key to balancing out the extra fabric from your 3rd and 4th layers. Your “blank canvas” should be a fitted top and straight-leg denim or pants, that way the jacket or sweater you’re layering on top won’t end up overtaking your silhouette. These Paige jeans from Nordstrom feature a flattering high waist and a slim straight leg that will serve as the perfect backdrop for your fall layers!
TIP #3: DON'T BE AFFRAID TO LAYER YOUR JACKETS
The best way to create warmth without a whole lot of bulk is to try layering a shorter jacket underneath a longer one, like I have here! Not only does it create warmth but it looks incredibly chic, especially if you drape the outer jacket. This black Alice & Olivia blazer is one of my favorites and it is perfect for a draped look.

TIP #4: DON'T SKIMP ON ACCESSORIES
Never forget to accessorize! Adding a chic belt and a necklace or scarf in the colder months is a guaranteed way to take any look to the next level. I tend to invest in high-quality pieces when it comes to accessories and this Clinch belt is no exception. You can switch up the belt with different buckles for the ultimate versatility and you can get 10% off with code SOHEATHERCB10 right now!
TIP #5: CHOOSE SOLIDS OVER PRINTS:
The final note on my list of fall layering tips is to choose solid colors over prints. This takes the guessing game out of layering as you don’t have to worry about prints clashing with each other. I personally love pairing denim shades with solid colors as I find they almost always go well together. As you can see in this look, I paired this cropped denim jacket by Free People with the A&O blazer, and the combo is perfectly fall-ready!
