As we age, our style evolves—but that doesn’t mean we have to settle for anything that makes us feel dull or invisible. In fact, what we wear has a direct effect on how we feel, how others perceive us, and most importantly, how we see ourselves. And one of the quickest ways to elevate your look and instantly appear more vibrant? Choosing the right colors. In this post, we’re breaking down 5 colors to avoid, why they don’t do us any favors, and what to wear instead to feel confident, modern, and radiant at any age.

SHOP LOOK 1:
NEON COLORS:
Neon shades like highlighter pink, bright yellow, and lime green can be so fun but they can also look cheap and harsh—especially on mature skin. They’re also very hard to wear without looking like you’re trying too hard. For summer 2025 I’m happy to say jewel tones are the way to go. Think sapphire blue, emerald green, deep plum, and ruby red. These rich hues are sophisticated, elegant, and seriously flattering. Personally, I’m always drawn to shades of blue—especially deep navy and periwinkle like this gorgeous summer dress from Mango. It fits like an absolute dream and has an AMAZING price point! I wear an XS and I find it fits true to size.
SHOP LOOK 2:
ALL BLACK:
Don’t come for me ladies — You know I love an all black look since I find it incredibly chic and slimming, but hear me out! As we get older, all black can be a little too harsh. It tends to create shadows on the face, emphasize fine lines and drain color from your skin. I suggest trying navy, chocolate brown, or charcoal gray. These are still classic neutrals, but they’re much softer and more forgiving. Chocolate brown is actually one of my favorite colors to wear—and this crochet summer dress is giving you 2 trends for the price of one! It is so light and comfortable and the under $60 price point is amazing! I wear an XS and would stick with your regular size for the best fit.
SHOP LOOK 3:
MUSTARD YELLOW:
Okay, I’ll be honest— in my personal opinion mustard yellow is just not a flattering color on anyone. It’s dull, muddy, and makes most complexions look sallow. For a more youthful appearance go for a creamy butter yellow or a more vibrant, sunny yellow. These shades are warm, happy, and way more flattering. Even if you’ve always thought yellow wasn’t your color, I’d encourage you to try a softer version—you might be surprised! This matching set from Revolve isn’t just insanely comfortable – it’s incredibly flattering as well. It’s the perfect way to wear this color for 2025, and I am here for it! I wear an XS in both the top and the matching skirt and they fit true to size.
IVORY VEST (XS) // JEANS (24) // KITTEN HEELS – FOR LESS // HANDBAG
SHOP LOOK 4:
STARK WHITE:
All white is another of my favorite color combos but I find that bright, crisp white can be too severe. It often highlights every little shadow or imperfection on the face, especially in natural light or photos. That’s why I like to incorporate softer and more elegants shades of winter white or ivory. I espeically love ivory pieces with gold accents like this gorgeous BLANKNYC vest—so chic and luxurious. These tones feel elevated but still give you that clean, fresh look. I wear an XS and I find it fits true to size.
BOXY DENIM TOP (XS) // WHITE DENIM // SANDALS – FOR LESS // HANDBAG
SHOP LOOK 5:
PALE MAUVE OR PALE LAVENDER:
While these colors might seem soft and feminine, they actually lack contrast and vibrancy, which can make your skin look tired or flat. For a flattering alternative I always recommend blue. Seriously—any shade of blue! Sky blue, denim blue, cobalt… It’s universally flattering and always makes you look more awake and polished. Blue is my signature color for a reason—it just works. This chic & edgy double denim look features a beautiful blue denim top that is the perfect medium wash for any time of the year. I wear an XS and I would stick with your regular size for the best fit.
