Stop Looking Washed Out: The #1 Trick That Instantly Makes You Look Younger

Stop Looking Washed Out starts with one simple word: contrast. As we age, we naturally lose contrast in our hair, brows, lashes, and even our skin tone, which can leave us looking dull or tired even when we’re not. After 20 years of wearing the same hair color, I made one intentional shift to bring contrast back into my look — and the difference was dramatic. In this post, I’m sharing the anti-aging power of contrast and five simple ways you can use it in your hair, makeup, and wardrobe to instantly look more vibrant and youthful.

Tip #1: Create Contrast With Your Clothes
If you want to stop looking washed out, start with color. Soft beige, ivory, and pale gray may feel safe, but they often drain the complexion as we age. Instead, choose shades that create contrast against your skin and eyes.
The teal blue midi dress is a perfect example. That richer jewel tone instantly brings life back to my face. It makes my eyes appear brighter and my skin look more saturated. Because it has depth, it adds structure to my overall appearance. When you intentionally wear color that contrasts with your features, you look more vibrant, more awake, and noticeably more youthful.

Tip #2: Choose a Hair Color That Doesn’t Wash You Out
Hair frames your face. However, when it becomes too light or too brassy, it blends into your skin. As a result, your features lose definition.
After 20 years of staying very blonde, I added cooler lowlights and went slightly darker. Immediately, my eyes stood out more and my skin looked brighter. More importantly, my face regained structure. Contrast does not mean going dramatically dark overnight. Instead, it means adding depth in a way that supports your natural coloring. Even subtle dimension can restore balance and, ultimately, take years off your look.

Tip #3: Wear a Medium Lip Shade for Instant Vibrance
Neutral lipstick can easily make your face disappear, especially if your skin and hair are already lighter. A medium-toned lip restores contrast and instantly brings life back to your face. My current favorite combination is the Lip Liner in Riri, the Lip Stain in Save the Queen, and the Gloss in Rose Amber. The liner defines the shape, the stain adds rich color, and the gloss placed in the center creates fullness and dimension. You can really see how it balances stronger outfits like this slate blue one-shoulder top with the faded black Mother jeans. Without a defined lip, the look feels flat. With it, everything looks intentional and polished.

Tip #4: Fill In Your Brows to Frame Your Face
Brows are one of the first features to lose contrast as we age. When they thin or lighten, the entire face can look softer and less structured. Even on minimal makeup days, I use the Tom Ford Brow Pencil in Taupe to subtly fill them in. It restores definition without looking harsh and instantly frames my eyes. This becomes especially important when wearing bolder pieces like this royal blue bomber jacket styled with one of my favorite pairs of flare jeans. Stronger outfits need that facial structure to feel balanced. Defined brows bring harmony back to your look.

Tip #5: Add Blush and Bronzer the Right Way
Blush and bronzer are essential for restoring warmth and dimension. I apply the Laura Geller blush slightly above my cheekbone and blend upward to create lift. Then I use the Bronzer Stick in Clay along the top of my cheekbones and temples, making sure to blend up rather than down. This placement keeps the face looking lifted instead of dragged. The warmth from blush and bronzer pairs beautifully with softer outfits like this white faux fur jacket styled with a gorgeous light blue top and wide leg jeans. Without that added warmth, the overall look can feel muted and cold. With it, the face looks vibrant, healthy, and youthful.
